چکیده

Increasingly large amount of multidimensional data are being generated on a daily basis in many applications. This leads to a strong demand for learning algorithms to extract useful information from these massive data. This paper surveys the field of multilinear subspace learning (MSL) for dimensionality reduction of multidimensional data directly from their tensorial representations. It discusses the central issues of MSL, including establishing the foundations of the field via multilinear projections, formulating a unifying MSL framework for systematic treatment of the problem, examining the algorithmic aspects of typical MSL solutions, and categorizing both unsupervised and supervised MSL algorithms into taxonomies. Lastly, the paper summarizes a wide range of MSL applications and concludes with perspectives on future research directions.

Multilinear Subspace Regression: An Orthogonal Tensor Decomposition Approach

A multilinear subspace regression model based on so called latent variable decomposition is introduced. Unlike standard regression methods which typically employ matrix (2D) data representations followed by vector subspace transformations, the proposed approach uses tensor subspace transformations to model common latent variables across both the independent and dependent data. The proposed appr...

Multilinear class-specific discriminant analysis

There has been a great effort to transfer linear discriminant techniques that operate on vector data to high-order data, generally referred to as Multilinear Discriminant Analysis (MDA) techniques. Many existing works focus on maximizing the inter-class variances to intra-class variances defined on tensor data representations. However, there has not been any attempt to employ class-specific dis...

Learning Modewise Independent Components from Tensor Data Using Multilinear Mixing Model

Independent component analysis (ICA) is a popular unsupervised learning method. This paper extends it to multilinear modewise ICA (MMICA) for tensors and explores two architectures in learning and recognition. MMICA models tensor data as mixtures generated from modewise source matrices that encode statistically independent information. Its sources have more compact representations than the sour...

Music Genre Classification: A Multilinear Approach

In this paper, music genre classification is addressed in a multilinear perspective. Inspired by a model of auditory cortical processing, multiscale spectro-temporal modulation features are extracted. Such spectro-temporal modulation features have been successfully used in various content-based audio classification tasks recently, but not yet in music genre classification. Each recording is rep...

A Convengent Solution to Tensor Subspace Learning

Recently, substantial efforts have been devoted to the subspace learning techniques based on tensor representation, such as 2DLDA [Ye et al., 2004], DATER [Yan et al., 2005] and Tensor Subspace Analysis (TSA) [He et al., 2005]. In this context, a vital yet unsolved problem is that the computational convergency of these iterative algorithms is not guaranteed. In this work, we present a novel sol...
